Day 14: Whakatū (Nelson)
Welcome
Yesterday we played a show at Playhouse Cafe and Theatre, a venue thirty minutes West of Whakatū.
My breakfast yesterday was two of these fresh raspberry muffins baked by the Mussel Inn kitchen.
We bid farewell to our hosts and Jonathan took command of Vangelis for the drive to The Playhouse. His proficiency behind the wheel allowed for a comfortable journey and we arrived feeling relaxed and refreshed.
The space we played in was described by Jonathan Pearce as “a real 1990s tax dodge of a venue”.
Luckily the sprayed polystyrene and concrete finish on the walls and ceiling not only contributed to the charming atmosphere of the room but dampened the sound reflections so the space ended up sounding amazing.
I’m glad that I remembered to film some of Jocee Tuck’s set because it was another gorgeous performance. Check out Jocee and her band in the video below.
I’ve had to find and dust off this trophy but it is such a huge pleasure to bestow this award once again. My bridge of the day goes is the Saltwater Creek Cycleway Bridge which stretches across what could possibly be described as a small tributary of the Maitai river in Port Nelson. This bridge is a single span construction 24m long and 3m wide and is a fully timber construction. The bridge is based on a traditional German Trog Brücke, or trough/ open bridge, and uses glulam beams and is cloaked in curved Garapa slats which reflect the idea of a waka/hull with the site being an early landing for local Iwi.
Today’s we profile someone who’s role in the tour party is conspicuously unimportant. He does cook a good egg though and has been known to get the band out of a sticky situation.
