Day 13: Takaka

Welcome

Yesterday we drove a couple of hours west from Nelson to the town of Takaka and the legendary Mussel Inn.

I kicked my day off with a giant bowl of porridge with banana, kiwifruit, pear, and peanut butter.

This was the perfect fuel for my run which took me on a stunning journey alongside the Maitai River.

Shortly after midday we departed for Takaka with a confident Tristan Deck at the helm. The Mussel Inn is a small restaurant and venue and is actually located just outside of Takaka in a place called Onekaka. It is a special place because of the beautiful wooden buildings constructed by Andrew Dixon, who runs the venue with his wife Jane. Andrew used to build Swedish Log Cabins for a living and built their house located behind the inn as well as a great deal of the furniture.

We sound-checked and then enjoyed some of the freshest Mussels of our lives.

We were supported last night by a great friend of ours, Jocee Tuck, who performed a special set of songs accompanied by vibraphone and marimba.

If we were expecting a chill Tuesday night set we were in for a shock. The locals turn up to the Mussel Inn ready for a night and to them Tuesday night is as good a night as any.

Check out this video shot by Callum Devlin featuring Malloy executing some incredible lighting cueing.

As a final feature tonight please enjoy this brand new episode of one of the most popular segments that we’ve seen on Breakfast and Travel Updates this season.
