Day 2: Portland
Welcome
Yesterday we arrived in Portland where we played our second show of the tour.
Liz and I started the day with a walk to get milk and found this excellent hedge.
Right next door to the venue was a great sandwich shop called Lottie and Zula’s and I bought myself some chicken soup for breakfast.
It was a glorious day so we spent a couple of hours basking in the sun before Tristan and I headed out for a run down to the Willamette river.
We saw several great spans but my favourite was Steel Bridge, a through-truss, double deck, vertical lift bridge built in 1912. It’s name came about because most bridges at the time were being constructed from wrought iron and steel was an unusual material to use. It is 243m long with a lift span of 64m, and it is the only double deck vertical lift bridge in the world.
The show was at Wonder Ballroom, a former church in the neighbourhood of Eliot, Portland. It was a fun room to play in and the audience were warm and welcoming. We got to watch a little bit of Lunar Vacation through this small window next to the stage.
After the show we sat on the bus and watched Tristan play Zelda for a while before settling back for the feature film of the evening, The Edge, an excellent film about wilderness survival.
