Day 6: Hastings, pt 2
Welcome
Yesterday we enjoyed another day off in Hastings which included some backyard cricket, voting, and a bush walk.
I began my day by constructing a double-decker breakfast sandwich with a fried egg, smashed avocado and feta, thinly sliced pork sausage, rocket, and Maison Therese Balsamic Onion Relish.
Tristan was determined to take us bird watching so we headed out to the Blowhard Bush Scenic Reserve located in the Kaweka mountain range. We spent several hours walking through native bush and enjoying the plentiful bird song and kaiora Matai trees.
In the afternoon we drove back to Hastings where we lunched and then headed out to cast an early vote in our National Election.
It turned out to be quite an exhaustive process so afterwards Callum and I unwound at a local watering hole, the Common Room, while the rest of the team played cricket back at the Airbnb.
Dinner was a splendid affair. Our friends Katie and Madeleine came over and cooked us a hearty lasagne and Bob proved that it was worth packing a tour sourdough starter when he produced two delicious loaves of bread.
Today’s profile is on an indispensable member of our tour party who is always first on scene and last to leave, and never shies away from a spot of tough work.
