Day 18: Waihopai (Invercargill)
Welcome
Yesterday we had a soft start so we breakfasted with our friends from Pickle Darling, and also Scott Kendall, before driving Southwest for two hours to our show at Waihopai’s Tuatara Lodge.
We ate at our favourite Ōtepoti spot Precinct where I ordered Fried Brioche with Chocolate Mousse, Blueberries, Dulce de Leche, and Caramelised Banana.
After breakfast we loaded up our van, hopped back onto State Highway 1, and drove it all the way to the end with only a brief detour to bypass Gore. We made a brief stop at the Mataura Paper Mill, currently home to 8500 tonnes of toxic Alumnium waste produced by the Tiwai Point smelter.
The rest of the day ran very smoothly. We sound-checked and then played cricket, and then watched Pickle Darling break hearts for the fourth night in a row.
My bridge of the day is a structure that weighs in at 4.2 google stars from 29 reviews. It carries State Highway 1 across the Mata-Au (Clutha River) at the town of Balclutha. Constructed between 1933 and 1935 it is a Bowstring Bridge built from reinforced concrete and has six parabolic curved spans of 36.6m and a total bridge length of 244.1m.
Today’s profile is on a wonderful individual who loves playing the guitar, playing cricket, and crunching numbers.
