Day 21: Washington DC
Welcome
Yesterday we did a small amount of sightseeing and then played a show at Black Cat in Washington DC.
I started my day with a short walk to Cafe U, where I ordered an Andre 3000 on an everything bagel - cucumber, tomato, red onion, capers, and cream cheese.
After breakfast Tristan and I continued with our grueling daily fitness routine of running a small amount and then stopping for a bit to take pictures. We ran down to see The White House but unfortunately arrived just as the Secret Service were closing Lafayette Square to the public. Our next stop was the National Mall where we visited the Washington Monument, the Reflecting Pool, and the Lincoln Memorial.
Black Cat is a legendary independent music venue located in the U Street Corridor close to the centre of DC. The club was founded in 1993 by a group of (mostly musician) investors who felt that DC suffered from a lack of good concert venues. The show featured a bubbly Friday night energy from the crowd and they responded well both to our performance and to the instruction we gave to turn their phone torches on during Jon’s solos.
We were very lucky to catch up with Todd Hyman, head of Carpark Records and friend of the blog, who had taken a PCR test so he could come and spend a few hours with us. Todd lives in DC and is a excellent tour guide showing us local spots and teaching us slang words like ‘the mall’, and ‘the district’. Feel free to comment below with any slang words you would like to share.
