Day 3: Sydney
Welcome
Yesterday we flew to Sydney for the second show of the Laneway tour.
I would like to start off with a correction. After receiving a strong recommendation from the IBC I have decided to award Liz 30 boints for her hour of throwing heat down on the dance floor at the Brisbane Laneway afterparty. She did an excellent job and this should have been immediately acknowledged.
Story Bridge - 20,000 boints
Ben - 2000 boints
Liz - 30 boints
Tristan - 0 boints
Jon - 0 boints
At 6.40am we assembled in the lobby. Everyone was in high spirits despite the relatively low amount of sleep we had experienced.
On the journey to the airport we consumed a breakfast of leftover berries and smoosh balls from the artist snack area.
The flight to Sydney was uneventful and took just over an hour. On the ground Tristan headed to pick up the rental van and the rest of us collected the gear. Gabe was on a later flight so the three of us had a challenging 15 minute walk to the pickup area pushing 4 trolleys.
The Sydney Showground provided an excellent venue for the Laneway festival. The two main stages are set at the north end of Exhibition Hall 4, a giant room that has an average rating of 4.3 stars from 29 google reviews. Exhibition hall 4 joins onto Exhibition Hall 2 (rated 5 stars from one review) and they combine to provide a massive indoor space that keeps festival-goers protected from the elements as they enjoy the performances. The electronica stage was set in the Charles Moses Stadium, a purpose-built venue for wood chopping.
Our stage was in Exhibition Hall 5 and although it had the lowest rating of the bunch it was a perfectly fine hall to host an afternoon of music. The concrete floor was flat and smooth and beautifully suited to a game of kick the can, if you got bored of listening.
Our set was really fun and was well received by the lively Sydneysiders. This is apparently the word to use for Sydney residents but I would love to find a better term if anyone holds that knowledge. We performed the live debut of the song ‘Best Left’ and none of us ended up with egg on our faces.
We spent the rest of the afternoon checking out some of the other acts. My highlights were Knucks, and Girl In Red. At some point Gabe earned himself a boint for getting Tristan a photograph with his doppelganger.
Although we would have loved to stay for the entire night we were completely stuffed so we headed back to the hotel. The lobby had a really good right angle sliding glass door which earned my admiration but fell just short of earning a boint.
