Day 14: Munich
Welcome
Yesterday we crossed the Alps and drove North into Germany for our first ever show in Munich.
Breakfast was a variation on the previous morning’s effort, though this time it was a Nutella croissant and the espresso was augmented by a chaser of red orange juice.
Leaving Milan we quickly made it to the border and crossed into Switzerland heading Northeast on the extremely scenic A13 motorway. The route starts along broad valley floors filled with pockets of heavy industry and centuries old towns and villages before gradually climbing into more rugged terrain, passing small alpine settlements and rich, blue mountain lakes.
The crossing of the Alps was achieved by driving through the 6.6km San-Berdino tunnel after which we experienced a gentle decent that took us down into the Rhine Valley and then carried along the border with Lichtenstein and Austria.
We had lunch at a very fancy rest stop and although my cup of black coffee did cost me 4.5 Swiss Francs ($7.06 NZD) it was worth it to see the impressive water feature outside the bathrooms.
Soon we were in Germany and the Autobahn carried us the rest of the way to our destination which was in the Western part of the city of Munich.
The show was at a venue called Kranhalle (crane hall) which is housed in a 1930s era factory that used to manufacture farming equipment. The facility is run by Feierwerk, a non-profit organisation for young art, music, and culture, and features a large concert hall, bar, and accommodation for touring musicians. Our experience at Kranhalle was delightful right off the mark and we were extremely happy with how the show went not to mention the great facilities and generous hospitality.
Here are a few shots from the evening taken by the extraordinarily talented and highly likeable Will Reading.
Will does such an incredible job of capturing moments from all of these shows but how does he really do it? Here is a small amount of behind the scenes footage to shed some light on this topic.
Update: Box 1 suffered another upset on the drive to Munich with a partial failure at one of the top corners.
Repairs have been carried out (masking tape + clear packing tape) and thankfully box 1 is back in action.
