Day 9: Melbourne, pt. 3
Welcome
Yesterday we had a day off in Melbourne.
I started my day with a rum and cola, eight eggs and a cigarillo. On our way to pick up Liz and Jon, I took a hook turn on my own time.
This is what happens when you leave your laptop open on the table and head in to buy everyone round of drinks.
In reality I began my day with a run and my run was the same as the time before. I ran along the Merri Creek trail and worked up a good sweat in the mid-morning sun. Tristan was pining for a breakfast when I returned and as soon I had cleaned up we headed out on foot, cruising the neighbourhoods for fare that would perfectly suit our needs. Our needs were met by the sandwich format, specifically that of a toasted sandwich which we found at a café called picnic, each of us ordering ourselves a mushroom melt. We sat at a table that was surrounded by hanging plants and read our books, munching on crispy mouthfuls of sourdough, cheese, and vegetables.
I went shopping in the afternoon and visited a couple of op shops in the Nicholson Village shops. Tristan also went shopping and bought a new lid for his Keep Cup. Liz went bouldering, the first climbs of the tour, and came back strong and fit. Jon went to a café to do some computer work and came back smarter and wiser.
That evening we went to Gabe’s house for dinner. Tristan had been out to the markets and turned up with a bag of ingredients ready to collaborate with Gabe on a meal. When we arrived, we sat back and watched this culinary marriage consummate, Gabe manning the grill with his marinated meats and Tristan putting together a delectable salad of fresh fruits and garden greens. It was a match made in heaven and the spread that graced the dining table was magnificent, leaving us happy and sated.
We made it back to our accommodation pleasantly early, tired and ready to recover from a couple of very late gigs and grateful for the opportunity for a full night’s sleep.
