Day 22: New York, Pt 3

Welcome

Yesterday we played our third and final show at the Williamsburg Hall of Music.

I wanted to spend a good part of the day preparing for my solo show so after waking up I found a quick breakfast less than a block from our accommodation. The café was called Almah and from their selection of pastries in the cabinet I selected a bureka that was filled with zucchini, eggplant, egg boiled, lettuce, and tomato, opting to take it back and eat it in a sunny corner of our apartment’s living area.

There were many members of The Beths touring party milling around the house during the day, taking advantage of the easy schedule and doing things like relaxing in front of the television and watching the hit reality survival show Alone.

In the afternoon I caught the subway to Williamsburg and was fortunate enough to witness a surprise performance in my train car. As the train hurtled along the tracks between Utica Ave and Broadway Junction a strong and agile dancer set down his boombox and began a routine that had him flying up and down the aisle, suspending his body from poles and spinning around in a fashion that was both impressive and scary.

Our third evening at this fine venue in north Brooklyn began with a quick soundcheck and then moved into a dinner date with Todd Hyman, a man who is a passionate supporter of the band, a fine mini golfer and also the head of our label Carpark Records. He wined and dined us, taking us out to a vegan Mexican restaurant for a delicious dinner, a dinner that was delicious, healthy, and light enough so that it wouldn’t impact our performance up on stage a couple of hours later.

Manhattan as seen from the shores of Williamsburg.

Disq were back to support us for another night, and they delivered more of the same high quality guitar music that we love so much and gets us in the mood to output a lot of energy over the course of our set. They also had on display a very fine piece of headwear, a black wide-brimmed hat that I imagine began its life as a souvenir carried all the way back from our homeland, and has now found employment as a treasured item of communal band clothing.

Our night three show felt nice and relaxed. There were a few familiar faces in the crowd by now and also quite a few old friends who had come out to see the show. Liz had written another great setlist and we ploughed through some of our oldest songs as well as some of the newest, finishing with another blow though of our most interactive number, 2am.
