Day 21: Picton
Welcome
Yesterday we farewelled another two members of our touring party and drove the great coastal stretch of State Highway 6 before heading inland toward Picton and the great Interislander ferry.
Hokitika airport was the final stop for Callum and Tristan on Vangelis’ great passage north. We hugged goodbye and left them at the small regional terminal as Liz, Jonathan, and myself set off for Hokitika town centre and hopefully a pleasant breakfast spot.
After a quick wander around we settled on Stella Cafe where I ordered a stuffed Kumara and a cheese roll.
After breakfast Jon and Liz had a phone interview so I went for a walk around the town centre.
I saw the clock tower
The statue
The theatre
The tavern
The Hokitika Beach sign
And the Winston A Reynolds memorial steps
TRIGGER WARNING: Alliteration
It was a glorious day as we set out on the magnificent coastal highway and we had a joyous jaunt observing the rugged rocky outcrops, bountiful bush, and shattering surf, while we wove along the windy roads in our valiant vehicle, Vangelis.
We made a short stop at Punakaiki to see the pancake rocks and then hastily hit the road as we had a great distance to cover to get to our ferry, and precious little time.
Thanks to a skilled pair of hands behind the wheel we made it to our check-in with minutes to spare, and not long after we were safely stowed in the hold of Kaiarahi ready for the gorgeous sunset passage across the Cook Strait.
While I have your undivided attention please take the time to enjoy this fantastic season finale of Callum Song Time.
Thanks for joining me for another tour. I hope to see you all again in the not-too-distant future.
love
