Day 19: Hamburg Pt. 2
Welcome
After a slow morning in Berlin yesterday we drove up to Hamburg in the afternoon.
We headed straight out to dinner with some of Deathcab's crew members at a local beer hall. The menu was mostly sausages and all of us were happy to oblige. We ate our sausages, drank Dunkel beer from giant glasses, and admired the lederhosen of our waiters.
Today I managed to have a good look around the city centre. Highlights include the town hall, the Hafencity and the St Nikolai cathedral. The cathedral which stands 147m high was the tallest building in the world when it was built. Allied bombing destroyed most of Hamburg in July of 1943 and left only the spire and the crypt standing. These have been preserved as a memorial to the 30,000 civilians killed in the bombing.
Breakfast today was a fischbrötchen with Bismarck Herring as the filling of choice.
